Excellent HTIB

Review Date: October 11, 2009
Reviewer: 350ZMO, AL USA
This is a very good to excellent 5.1 HTIB with BD DVD. It cannot compare with a system comprised of best of breed components or an excellent 7.1 HTIB. All speakers including the sub are powered by the base unit. THe base unit has a fan on the back instead of vents on the top. You'll find many reviews out there on this product. The base from the sub is not crisp like a powered sub but the quality is adequate and the volume is plentiful. Same can be said for the rest of the speakers as long as your room is big enough for a volume setting of 12 or higher. I notice below that setting the multi channel sound field diminshes. Speakers are plastic cased. There are preset modes for sound fields for news sports natural etc, I watch movies on bypass. News is good for when you want to hear very clearly the spoken words without the auditory distraction of music and multi channel affets. Plug it into the network and update the firmware to get full streaming options like u-tube. If you are looking for a 5.1 HTIB system this is highly recommended. One drawback I wish HTIBs in general had was an equalizer for a custom sound profile instead of picking a preset like news sports etc. But HTIBs are optimised for ease of use. The DVD tray isn't as stout as I'd like it to be. Sounds good but doesn't compare to my Onkyo HT-S9100THX 7.1 HTIB for either sound or inputs. This LG is obviously a huge improvement over built in TV speaker sound. The speaker wires are very small gauge but they work. Some people complain about the short front L/R speaker wire lengths. Actually the lengths are perfect for an optimum 5.1 speaker placement but your application may not allow optimum placement. Google for optimum 5.l speaker placement and you'll find the diagram. For these reasons you may want to buy speaker wire, I would suggest 16 gauge for the power levels of these speakers is adequate. Also you will need speaker mounts. It does have digital audio in so you can connect the digital out of your TV and watch HD TV with 5.1 sound by setting the input of the LG to aux. It also has analog portable stereo in so you can connect your laptop to your TV for video and select input on the LG to portable for sound. If you are looking for a true 7.1 dolby True HD experience (few titles but list may grow in the future) then look for a 7.1 system. For a 7.1 HTIB, the HT-S9100THX is my choice for excellent sound quality unbelievably in an HTIB, but it lacks the streaming options of the 5.1 LG LHB953. Video up conversion for Standard Definition DVDs is very good to excellent. From an unscientific subjective point of view, SD movie watching quality rivals my Faroudja DCDi based Oppo DV-981HD and HT-S9100THX (analog video source). Keep in mind the systems discussed here are very different systems for very different applications, large projector based home theater room, large bedroom. But room size and application is a factor in any home theater system. Note this unit has no HDMI in. In general if you are looking for a decent sounding 5.1 HTIB with internet video streaming and iPOD features, then this should be on your short list.
Great system but remote problems

Review Date: September 23, 2009
Reviewer: L. Gabella, Colombia
We just recently purchased this system.
The sound is great compared to our previous home theatre. The only problem we have is that the remote control is not quite good. We need to lean forward in order for it to work and it is quite unconvenient.
Maybe we need to check the sensor or something. Other than that it works perfectly.
Awkward interface

Review Date: July 18, 2010
Reviewer: M. Schilling,
This system has some nice features (e.g., built in Netflix streaming, Pandora, etc.) and was easy to install. However, the interface/buttons are sort of a deal killer. First, buttons isn't the right word. The system has smooth touch sensitive spots where you push to choose a function like iPod, or DVD, etc. However, rather than having a spot for each function, they have one "function" button and you have to scroll through all the functions, so anytime you want to change from DVD to iPod, for example, you have to scroll through FM, AM, etc. Secondly, the touch sensitive buttons aren't nearly sensitive enough. Sometimes I have to push really hard to try to get the system to react, which is annoying. Also, the system wants to update its software every time you turn it on, which means you have to wait for awhile before you can even get started on that pushing.

These problems are kind of silly -- they would have been so easy to avoid.

Excellent home theater at a good price.

Review Date: March 11, 2009
Reviewer: Neil Battelle,
This home theater system is what convinced me to finally make the jump to Blu-ray. I bought it from Amazon at 51% off its $1000 MSRP. I added Amazon Prime and had it in my home in two days. Set up was simple, but with seven speakers plus a subwoofer, there's a lot of wire running around my family room.
The picture quality of the Blu-ray discs is stunning, and a regular DVD gets upconverted to 1080p, so all my old stuff looks much better than ever, too. The sound is spectacular, too. My Blu-ray copy of Men in Black had the walls and floor literally shaking with rocket engines and explosions. Everything I've played, be it Blu-ray or regular DVD, has been terrific, both picture and sound.
If you're considering making the move to Blu-ray, don't hesitate to give this system serious consideration.
We love it!

Review Date: April 12, 2009
Reviewer: Theodor E. Winkel,
Having studied several home theater systems "in a box", we settled on this one to join our Samsung 50" plasma. It's lived up to its positive reviews, creates an awesome theater experience and is an excellent value. A couple caveats. Set up as suggested--especially keeping the front right and left speakers in line with the center channel. We initially didn't, and the slight delay between the fronts and center yielded an easily discernible out-of-synch sound effect. Also resist the temptation to turn up the subwoofer too loudly. When you get it right you'll have the deep bass you need and you won't be able to identify the location of the sub. If you have a Samsung TV you can use the Blu-ray remote for the TV. Kick back and enjoy!

I have an LG blu ray player, model BD270. Im wondering if I can hook it up to my older dvd/5.1 channel speaker system. DVD player is an AudioLogic, a few steps down to your typical sony. Im just confused, sounds weird to hook up a blu ray player to a dvd player and use the audio portion of it.
The older surround system doesnt have HDMI outlets on it.
