Product Description

Discover the difference great sound can make. Onkyo's HT-S770B home theater system includes a 6.1-channel Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic II audio/video surround receiver and a complementary 6.1-channel speaker package featuring 2-way front, center-channel, and surround speakers paired with a gut-thumping 220-watt subwoofer. You can use the HT-S770B with any existing DVD player or changer.

The 6.1-channel receiver provides full compatibility with the latest DVD soundtracks, encoded with either Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES. The receiver features Dolby Laboratories latest processing algorithm, Pro Logic IIx, which can automatically generate full 6.1-channel surround sound from any stereo or Dolby Digital source. The receiver also features HDTV-capable component video switching for optimum signal quality, and a wide range of input and output connections for compatibility with any A/V equipment.

The receiver delivers as much as 130 watts of continuous power into six 8-ohm speakers (such as those that come with the system) with no more than 0.08 percent THD to fill even most of the largest rooms with dynamic, nuanced sound. The speaker mapping works out to 2 each front (left/right), center (front/rear), and surrounds (left/right).

The package also includes six 2-way surround sound loudspeakers and a 10-inch subwoofer for high-quality reproduction of movie soundtracks and multichannel music. The front left and right satellites include a 1-inch balanced dome tweeter flanked by a pair of 5.25-inch woofers made of the company's highly regarded OMF (Onkyo Micro Fiber). The center channel features a pair of 4-inch OMF woofers and the same tweeter in a horizontal design, and all 3 surround channels feature a single OMF woofer and tweeter arrangement for a tonally matched 360-degree soundstage.

The user-friendly design is evident in the system's color-coded inputs and outputs. Now you'll no longer need to worry about which cable goes to which input or output. Simply attach the color-coded speaker cable to its like-colored input or output for fast and easy connections.

Want to integrate the system with your existing stereo speakers? With the subwoofer's handy crossover selector, you can set the sub's upper frequency at 60, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz, depending on the lower boundary of your existing speakers' bass extension. This lets you more accurately match the performance characteristics of the subwoofer to your front speakers--as well as to the bass performance of the supplied front left/right speakers as they perform in your room; each position will result in a slightly different audible frequency response.

What's in the Box
A surround amplifier/receiver, 2 front speakers, 2 center-channel speakers, 2 surround speakers, a powered subwoofer, a remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and all requisite interconnects and cabling.

Wow!!!!!!

Review Date: January 4, 2005
Reviewer: Marc A. Garoutte, Auburn, Wa
We have had this system for a week now and are truly amazed. We replaced an old 150 watt per channel Dolby 4.0 surround system (purchased in 1988 for $1,400) with this.

The set up was quick and easy and we were enjoying our first movie within an hour of bringing it home. We spent the next week reading the manual to tune this system for optimal sound experience.

I did replace the sub woofer cable with a heavy duty one and the bass improved dramatically. I also replaced the standard speaker wires with 16 ga Monster Cable and achieved more sound quality improvements. I think updating the speaker cables would not be required in a small room but for the volume levels we needed for our 20' x 20' listening area (within a 20 x 35' room) it made a big difference.

We will be investing in new optical/digital audio cables to take advantage of the increased signal clarity offered from our DVD player, CD player, and HD Digital Cable receiver. If our initial experience with analog audio inputs so far hold true we should be able to say we have achieved home theater nirvana once we complete the digital upgrade.

When I look over at my wife and see the smile on her face while listening to movies, TV Shows, and music I know I made a great purchase.
Best for the Buck

Reviewer: Poogy,
I started from scratch on this purchase. I have a marginal TV and finally decided to get a DVD player (yes, I was late to the game). I also wanted to be able to play music in the same room, so a home theater was the thing to buy, but I knew nothing about them. I'm a cautious consumer; I read everything on line, check out magazines, ask everyone I know, then go to all the stores and look and listen, then price-shop. A $500 impulse buy is out of the question for me. I started out thinking I could get by with spending a couple of hundred dollars, and some of those systems sound OK -- IF you don't also listen to anything much better, which will spoil you. I eventually decided that I wanted this purchase to keep me happy for a while, and that a couple of hundred more would be worth it, if the system was substantially better. This one is. There's a definite quantum jump up to this system from, say, a Panasonic or Sony system priced a bit lower; they sound more like a good quality boom box, and this sounds like a stereo system. Listen to it next to anything in its class and you'll agree; the others sound tinny and small. (The workmanship also is outstanding; you'll be pleased to have these speakers in your home.) I may not like to admit that I watch much TV, but I do, and this system creates a different experience, even with my dinky TV. It also opened up the whole world of concert DVDs, which sound awesome. You won't be disappointed. (Regarding the reviewer who was unhappy with the sound of her music CDs, it's true that you can get somewhat better sound from a pair of excellent speakers if you're willing to spend at least $700, but you won't get surround sound or the receiver that comes with this system.)
Onkyo is the best

I recently sold my Onkyo HT-S760 model to get the 770 and let me tell you
it was worth it. This system is untouchable when it comes to HTIB, sure
it's not audiophile perfect, it's not ment to be, If you are an
audiophile you are not going to buy a home theater in a box anyways you
are going to spend around$2000-$5000 building your own.. It is the best
system you could buy for $399 (I got mine at Fry's). The Prologic 2x is
a real treat. and the up conversion for Dolby Digital and DTS makes the
pot even sweeter.(you can set it so that it will play 5.1 movies in
6.1). A feature sorely lacking on the previous model. 6.1 is definetly
worth it, I was skeptical at first when I bought the 760, but now I
cannot live without it. The system doesn't handle music that well but
it is a home theater system and it delivers on that (I watched the
grudge and actually jumped when the music got loud twice). The remote
is big and will take a few weeks to learn all of the features even for
someone like me who had owned Onkyo's previous model. Onkyo is the only
HTIB company I would buy from, I had Sony HTIB's but now they are
horrible. Every one I have tried needs the volume to be up to 35- 40
just to be heard. This system is extremely powerfull,, and extremely
impressive, they actually out did themselves with 1 coaxial , and 3
optical inputs.. This is the one to own, I cannot believe I got this
much power for only $399. Make sure to upgrade the speaker wire, and
sub cable to Monster and you will be good to go.
I did not expect this!.

After a long research, I bought this system with a great expectation. My previous home theater (Panasonic SC-HT05) was only 600 Watts.
This system has enough power to fill a BIG room. It did very well with movies; the six speakers works great and give you a real theater feeling. When I tried some music CDs the sound was muddy and there was no punching effect. I expected more from this big speaker but was very disappointed. I tried different bass/treble settings, tried to adjust the speaker/subwoofer sounds and nothing helped.
If you are like me buying this system for music and movies, be aware of this. Returning this system will cost you lots of money!!.

Great System! Great Value!

Review Date: July 17, 2007
Reviewer: Eliezer Kolatch, Bronx, NY USA
As you can see from a quick search this is almost always reviewed highly and is also highly rated by Consumer Reports. I recently got my own and I wasn't disappointed. The system was easy to set up and a quick browse through the instructions gave me all the info I needed. I have listed the 3 most common complaints about the system below.

1. The HDMI is just a pass through you have to connect the sound to the unit separately (not really that big a deal).

2. The included wire is too thin: this is true you can replace it cheaply with wire bought on Amazon, so its not devastating. I recommend the METRA Ltd S14-100 MTA 14 Gauge Clear Speaker Wire which you can get here for $21.53 and will really improve things.

3. Onkyo doesn't make speaker stands for this system and the speakers only have keyhole style brackets on the back for mounting which can make buying wall brackets difficult.
I'm not positive how to resolve this, B-tech makes some screw in mounts you can put in if you dont mind putting some wholes in the speakers B-TECH BT1 Universal Speaker Bracket for Small Speakers (Pair per box). They also make a wall mount that clamps the side of the speakers if youd prefer not putting holes in your new speakers B-Tech BT77 Speaker brackets Black.
But both of those solutions are kinda expensive (30 per pair for screw in, 70 per pair for the clamps).
I recently bought some universal mounts (Premier Mounts PSPK-5B Universal Speaker Mount for Walls and Ceilings with 2.5-Inch Extensions (Black)) that supposedly work with keyholes so we'll see.

UPDATE: the speakers are great, make sure to use the microphone to calibrate, this is part of the value of the system and makes a big difference in the sound quality.
About the mounts:
The cheap universal mounts, were ok.
They worked fine on the Satellite speakers but there were some design flaws and they don't have the strength to hold up the big front speakers. One of the pieces broke during assembly but as I had 5 and couldn't hang the front speakers with them anyways that wasn't too big of a problem.

I used the 29.99 B-Tech mounts mentioned above (the ones that have to be screwed in) for the front speakers and they worked perfectly. Enjoy!

Product Description

The HT-S990THX is the first system to meet the parameters set by THX for overall system performance as opposed to separate loudspeaker and amplifier performance. In effect, the HT-S990THX represents a high-performance, powerful multichannel solution that combines the convenience of all-in-one systems with the performance of much higher priced separate components. With full THX processing capabilities-- THX ASA-derived playback modes (THX Cinema2, THX Music Mode, THX Games Mode)--you can be assured that this system brings out the full potential of surround sound for all entertainment options. Equally as important, Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) gives the system a perfect base for stellar amplifier performance. Also, the HT-S990THX's compatibility with XM Satellite Radio and the iPod offers a completeness to this home entertainment system that has rarely been seen before.
