MVBD2520 Best Blue Ray Player for the money

Review Date: December 8, 2009

This player plays the latest Blu-ray DVD's and regular DVD's on my 1080P Samsung Plasma outstandingly without any problems. After reading the reviews on this player I almost sent it back unopened for refund. Got it for a great price on black Friday and decided what the heck, I would give it a try. Hooked it up to the internet and a new 1080P HDMI cable and it has played perfectly for a week. I think the problem people have been having is hooking with an older non 1080P HDMI cable. Make sure your HDMI cable is 1080P capable!! Too bad Memorex did not include a 1080P HDMI cable. What a great buy, glad I did not send it back!
Update, Memorex has fix on website for this unit, It's nice now! .

Just want to let people know that this unit is much better now since Memorex has put a fix up on it's website for this unit. I don't notice any bad problems with the unit anymore, it's just fine, works like you would hope that it would. The rest of this review is what was submitted before the fix.........Just bought this unit from a competing website that had a Black Friday sale. Got a really good deal I thought. The unit itself looks sharp, the unit plays a variety of discs, Blu-ray, DVD, CD. I pop in a couple of CD's, they play flawlessly, a good start. Then later in the evening, pop in the first Blu-ray title, Ghost Rider, starts up fine & picture quality is very nice, about 25 minutes or so in the movie, the screen goes blank, than turns to snow & have to press a variety of buttons to try to get the unit under control. OK, start the movie back to the point where we were at, it plays the previous portion just fine, but than about 3 more times in the remainder of the movie, the movie freezes for a second or so and continues, very annoyed. Later that night I play the movie again, just to see if the issue is the same, this time it plays almost flawlessly, but hangs up just once for about a second or so, so much better, but that still sucks to me, I'm used to seeing movies just play, without hitches, I don't normally think about it. Later play an hour long dvd, and throughout the dvd it hangs up for about a second at a time, I would guess about 20 times, that's just beyond crap. I will play another Blu-ray later today, the fifth Harry Potter movie, will see how it goes, but not optimistic.
I would be happy with the unit if it would just play a Blu-ray & DVD without the above flaws. I read the other issues people were having about the noise of this unit when you put a DVD into it. Yes a DVD is noisy, but I can live with that, Blu-ray & CD has a quiet operation, it is a strange occurrence, but whatever. I'm not bothered with the remote issue someone else had, it's fine to me. I'm also not bothered about the boot time of the unit, not a big deal. If Memorex can get me a unit that plays discs, I will be happy. Just have to wait & see. I did check there website for firmware on this unit & saw nothing.
My player was just fine

I just wanted to point out that not all these players are defective. Unlike other people here, I didn't have any problems with this player. I purchased it from Target for 109.99, which is insanely low for this machine. If I had read these reviews first, I probably wouldn't have bought it at all. But luckily, mine works great. I didn't see any of the problems that other people are reporting. It wasn't noisy, and DVDs didn't skip at all. Setup was very easy, and both picture quality and sound were GREAT using all the default options. The setup menu also lets you tweak video and sound quite a bit if you want to.

Incidentally, it also lets you plug in your own USB memory stick or SD card to play files, which is a nice feature.

I only had 3 very minor complaints:
1) the remote control is rather weak; it only works if I'm pretty close to the machine.
2) There were no hi-def cables, no DVI or HDMI. Just standard AV plugs, which is annoying because they are useless if you want to see anything in hi-definition. I understand the reason why; the fact is that an HDMI cable alone costs about $25 and this is a budget player. But it probably would have been better for Memorex not to include the AV plugs at all, since people who are unfamiliar with hi-def video will use them and get confused about why their Blu-Ray disks don't look any better than standard DVDs. Answer: purchase a DVI or HDMI cable if you don't have one. If you TV doesn't support that connection, then at least purchase a R/B/G component cable (google these if you don't know what I'm talking about). As an absolute last resort, use the included AV cables.
3) It wouldn't play my own computer AVI or MP4 files, and the documentation doesn't say what are the requirements of video files it will play. But it does just fine with photographs (along with a slideshow), music, and probably many other files.

Bottom line: great player, unbeatable price, but keep in mind you may need to purchase a decent cable for it.
Pass on this one, get a better model

I bought this model in November when it was on sale at Target for $99.99. I tried it out but returned it in about a week. Although it was a very attractive unit in my opinion, the performance didn't live up to the look. I tested the Blu-Ray movie "Up" and it looked and sounded great. However when I tried to play regular DVDs on it, it skipped and glitched way too much, to the point of making it too annoying to watch. Since the majority of my movies are in the DVD format, this model won't work for my needs. Also the remote control was very annoying to use as it requires a firm "click" for the buttons. This might get better over long term use, or at least you could become accustomed to it.

One very major problem with this unit is in the area of firmware updates. Blu-Ray players will need ongoing updates (firmware)to play newer movies. If the company that produced your Blu-Ray player doesn't put out these updates in a timely manner (not to mention putting out "correct" updates for your product) then you will be out of luck when trying to watch newer movies. During the time I had this unit I checked Memorex's website and the last firmware update they put out was in Dec 2008 and there was the following text that said:

"The incorrect version of the MVBD2510 firmware was added to our website on December 11th".

This message was referring to December 2008, not December 2009.

It was mentioned further on the Memorex website that a firmware version dated December 24, 2008 was supposed to fix the previous "incorrect" update. Also the site didn't make it clear what model this update was for (it appeared to be for model MVBD2510, not sure about MVBD2520). Entering the model number of MVBD2520 brought me to the same page on their site, so maybe the firmware is for both versions of their Blu-Ray players. Or maybe they just made another mistake, who knows...

Considering the importance of updates when it comes to Blu-Ray, it makes the most sense to purchase a player from a company that will stand behind and support their product and get out updates in a timely and correct fashion. Otherwise that shiny new machine could become obsolete much sooner than you think.

Considering the glitchy playback of regular DVDs and sensing that I was going to end up with a piece of junk in the long run I took this back to Target. Good thing too because in just a few weeks I snagged an LG BD370 at Fry's Black Friday 2009 event for $77. This player plays both Blu-Ray and regular DVDs just fine AND it has the bonus of Netflix and YouTube streaming. The YouTube streaming is more of a novelty for me, but the Netflix streaming is awesome and I have used it quite extensively already.

To sum up I would steer clear of this player. Just do some simple searches on the internet regarding Memorex Blu-Ray players and firmware and you'll find some very unhappy people out there...
Not terrible

I got this for just over $100 and I'm satisfied. I didn't want to break the bank on my first blu-ray and this one has been satisfactory to this point. It definitly skips regular dvd's, but its only a slight annoyance for me (only skips a bit once every 15/20 minutes). The blu-ray quality is pretty good and no skipping issues. The player is definitely loud and most certainly will shake whatever its sitting on. We put a few towels underneath it to absorb some of the vibration (our av equipment is tucked away in a cabinet, so its out of sight). If you're only looking to spend about $100, then this player is not a bad choice; if you're looking for a quality player... I would suggest shelling out a few more clams and investing in a slightly more reliable product.
