Highest quality Blu Ray picture of our three Blu Ray players

Review Date: January 29, 2009
Reviewer: I. Haynes, Eastern WA
We have a Sylvania Blu Ray player which has an excellent picture and a Samsung model 1500 which has a very good picture. Our fairly new Magnavox Blu Ray player which we purchased at Walmart has an outstanding picture and plays old scratched DVD's well even old 480 digital format DVD's. The Magnavox is the top rated model at Consumer Reports currently although the Sylvania Blu Ray player used to be the top pic at Consumer Reports previously, but I think the Sylvania Blu Ray player model has been discontinued. There is no S video connection on the Magnavox, but with HDMI there is really no need for a S video connection
Great Picture and Quality IF you buy the Older Models !!!

This is a great Blu-Ray player with an amazing picture and very good load times (beats the Sony 350 in load and play times) IF you can find one of the older models. The unit is made by Funai, and was made initially with 3 (or up to 3) proprietary Magnavox chips or boards by Funai for Magnavoxs' entry into the Blu-Ray market. It appears Magnavox didn't want the early players to seem cheap or inferior, so it made sure the first round of units was better. As far as I know, units made no later than August of 2008 (as mine was), will have at least some of these chips, and should work much better than the Black Friday versions from the other reviews. How you find these older units is another question, which I don't have a clear answer for. We got our unit at Walmart last August, and it has worked fine, playing every disc we have put in, including the Bedtime Stories Blu-Ray that has caused so many problems with the newer Funai made units. Check the batch labels and shipping labels for dates, which will give you a pretty good idea how old the unit is, and if your lucky enough to find an older unit, I would strongly suggest buying it if the price is right. This machine is not firmware upgradable, but you won't need to if you happen to find an older one. Good Luck. !!!
Best Blu-ray for the $$$!

Reviewer: D. Decker,
I purchased this BD player from WalMart when it was $299.00. It was well worth the price! The load times really surprised me. I haven't waited more then 30 seconds. Experience the superior picture quality of Blu-ray movies in full 1080p high-definition on your HDTV. DVDs will also look their best thanks to 1080p upconversion on compatible HDTVs that have an HDMI port. The NB500MG9 can play CDs and JPEG photos that have been burned onto CD-Rs, too. Additional highlights include component video output and a digital coaxial output for connecting compatible surround sound systems. You sure can't go wrong for the $$$!
SIMPLY AMAZING PICTURE AND SOUND

After reading all the reviews I decided that I would take a chance at this blu ray player which at the time was offered at Walmart for $98.00. When I went back to the store, they actually had a later model on the clearance rack for $68.00 without the remote. Well I took a chance and I have nothing but good things to say. Every blu ray played except Batman Begins. I downloaded the firmware update from the manufacuturer's website and everything is fine. Thanks for all the reviews and I guess its hit or miss since some got a machine that was a lemon.
